Tewari was moved to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs
as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) on 27-7-2020. “He shall hand over the charge
to Ranjana Jha, the Chief Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Delhi, who
shall look after the charge in addition to her present charge,” said the office order
issued by Revenue Department under Secretary S.A. Ansari.
Customs insiders said the transfer was unusual as the 1988 batch Indian
Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) officer had taken up the sought-
after post in the national capital only in February.
Tewari was evasive when ET reached out to him to seek his reaction on
charges that he delayed clearing the surveillance consignment. “All kinds of
stories are going on. You ask them...,” he said. About his abrupt removal, he
said : “That’s the prerogative of the Government , I have little to add.’
According to sources in the Finance Ministry the imported drone detec-
tion equipment had arrived through air cargo in Delhi a few days back. The
Government agency for which it was meant approached and tried to convince
Customs Officials at the airport to take possession of the confidential courier
without any delay. But Customs sleuths insisted on relevant documents and
permissions.
The delay in handing over items is said to have angered top brass of the
agency and in the North Block and South Block, leading to Tewari’s sudden exit
from the post.
The Centre had in December, 2018 introduced comprehensive regula-
tions for drone operations in the country which included the need for an import
licence from Direct General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to bring in such Equipment
from abroad.
